Chapter One - Testing Again.
Wyzall's Magic Academy; Enchantorre Kingdom; Autumn.
It was the week after the appearance of Wyzall's Endless Magic Ranger team. At least that is what the king of Enchantorre was calling the Magic Rangers. He knew they answered to Wyzall and only appeared when the situation was dire.
Today was to be one of those enrollment days that most students dreaded. The induction of new students was usually more work than needed. True, they had room to house many more students and with the recent appearance of the Legendary Magic Rangers, nearly everyone wanted to learn magic just to get a chance to meet the new heroes. Keeping a low profile was easy for Petal since no one would ever believe that she was a magic ranger; especially not a palace maiden like her. Tails likewise had no problems keeping a secret; everyone simply liked the two-tailed fox since he was willing to help them all with their lessons. Sadly the secrecy issue seemed to reside in Recon whom wanted to tell everyone very badly that he was one of the heroes. Wyzall and Tails had caught him bragging to other students just the day before in a discussion about how the magic rangers could summon water elementals, something that none of the students in the academy should have known anything about. But this was smoothed over when Tails mouthed to Master Wyzall to play along and then as the two came around the corner, Tails said, "Thanks for telling a few of us about the magic rangers spells, Master Wyzall." The master then replied with, "They are an inspiration to the whole academy. Maybe someday we will get to meet them." Then he set a gaze on Recon and mentally told him that he wanted to see him in his office - RIGHT NOW; not later.
Within the office, Wyzall said to Recon, "The Magic Rangers best defense is their secrecy, Recon. But if you tell everyone what you know of them, then someday you may accidentally tell the enemy about our heroes then the defeat will lay solely upon you. And if I learn that you have done this, what befell Aurak could befall you. And speaking of your old friend... he is going to attempt to re-enroll today and that is another reason you need to keep quiet about the Magic Rangers. If the pompous prince learns you have the power, he will ask for it himself. And has he earned it?" He then got out of his chair. "I will let you think about that one, Recon. Report to the main hall so you and the other students can witness the latest student hopefuls. I no longer take payments to teach someone magic. A student must be tested. Aurak has already agreed to my terms since he learned that he does have the spark."
Within the main hall, Tails stood next to Petal; both were wondering where Recon was, but soon, Recon arrived in the main hall where he took his place next to Tails. And then Master Wyzall walked over to the center of the entrance hall and announced, "May those to be tested enter to greet me and to receive their tests of Truth, Loyalty and Dedication!"
Recon and the others half-way expected Aurak to cut in line to be first, but instead a rather rotund sailor's son came in and took his place before Master Wyzall.
"Name?"
"Ambrose of Wild Bay, great one."
Wyzall arched an eye. "That is your entire name?"
Ambrose replied, "At Wild Bay, only nobility are permitted to have surnames, great one. If you are going to hold that against me then perhaps you would like to take that up with the Wild Bay prince whom rules there."
Wyzall wasn't impressed because peasants even had surnames in the world. But he pressed on. "Have you attempted to gain an apprenticeship here before?"
Ambrose replied, "No, great one. I wanted to come last year but the harvest was poor and my father couldn't raise the funds to have me make the trip."
Wyzall hummed. He knew that part was often true. Nobility usually hogged all of the harvest funds leaving little for the people. "Are you prepared to be tested?"
Ambrose nodded his head quietly as if he was steeling himself up for the task at hand.
Wyzall pointed toward a table where a candle and an empty lantern sat. "Either light the candle or make the empty lantern glow. I will let you choose which you wish to try."
Ambrose wasn't expecting to get a choice but he focused on the empty lantern since he had made things glow before back home. Mentally, Wyzall heard him say, I have done these things back home unless I was tricked. Please make the glow even if just a little.
After a few uneventful moments, Wyzall said, "I think a quick lesson is in order, Ambrose. Are you believing with your heart that you can do this or are you simply expecting it to work because it often did back home?"
Ambrose hung his head with his gaze on the floor. "I will bother you no more, Great One. I was obviously tricked. And while his eyes were no longer on the lantern, it did indeed light up and it glowed not just a little, but very brightly. Master Wyzall did a quick scan to see if the magic was coming from Ambrose or from another source. From a nearby window, Wyzall saw a cloaked magic user wearing the Wild Bay standard as a neckerchief. With a hard flick of his mind, the magic user was blown out the window and off the academy plateau. When Wyzall did this stunt, the lantern went dead. The owl then took Ambrose over to the table point-blank. "Ambrose... while they did trick you back home, perhaps you do have something. Try to ignite the wick of the candle. Focus your entire willpower upon the wick and nothing else. All you need to do is make the wick turn red for a second and you will succeed. The Mage whom was making your lanterns glow is likely pulling thorns out of his body. I despise cheaters." He then stepped back to permit Ambrose to focus on the candle.
Ambrose wasn't sure why the wizened owl was even giving him another chance since he had been led to believe that he had the spark and even Wyzall had just proven that he couldn't make something glow on his own. He was already embarrassed. He picked up the candle and he looked at the wick and then much to his own surprise, it lit. Not just an ember, but an actual flame. "I've never been able to make a flame before; so why did they make me think that I could only make things glow?"
